Surroundings

Sualma overlooks a meadow, the Gaverbos and the Zwalm valley. Those looking for silence can find it here, except for the sound of birds and a tractor. The house and garden are so inviting that you don't have to go anywhere!

For those who can't sit still: the centuries-old sunken road Hembeke is on several walking and cycling routes that take you through the  Flemish Ardennes

It is the ideal place for walks, bike rides and exploring local villages and heritage. Whether you are looking for an adventurous holiday or a quiet retreat, our holiday home offers an unforgettable experience where you can enjoy the tranquility of nature, enriched by the culture and hospitality of the Flemish Ardennes.

Sualma is located in Paulatem, 1 of the 12 Zwalm villages, a stone's throw from Zottegem, Oudenaarde or Brakel. Bruges, Ghent and Brussels are also easily accessible by train or by car.

Places of interest

You will find the Zwalm a stone's throw from the house. Along the stream you can see and visit several centuries-old water mills.

The closest mill is the Ijzerkotmolen. The Ijzerkotmolen immediately takes you back in time. The old water mill was first mentioned in 1452 and was successively a paper, iron, copper, oil and corn mill.

A little further along the Zwalm, in the valley of the Zwalm, hidden between forests lies Klein Zwitserland, a fairytale inn surrounded by water and greenery. The name chosen for this inn was 'Klein Zwitserland', because the lock keeper compared this place to Switzerland in his imagination: "My pond is Lake Geneva, the hills are the Swiss mountains and when the locks are open, I have a waterfall.”

The Kaaihoeve is a provincial nature education centre housed in an 18th century farm. The farm is situated near the old Scheldt, an old cut-off arm of the Scheldt in the Kaaimeersen nature reserve. You can walk there, play in the garden or try the barefoot path.

The Provinciaal Archeocentrum Velzeke is an archaeological centre about the early history of the Belgian province of East Flanders. The centre highlights prehistory, the Gallo-Roman period and the early Middle Ages in the province of East Flanders. The permanent exhibition in the centre shows daily life in the past with the help of archaeological finds from the region. Among other things, a Roman silver treasure that was found in Everbeek can be seen.

The Flemish Ardennes are a walking and cycling paradise.

There are various walking and cycling routes in the holiday home.

In the immediate vicinity you will find legendary cobblestone tracks such as the Paddestraat and the Molenberg.

In Oudenaarde the Tour of Flanders Centre is entirely dedicated to Flanders' Finest, the most powerful race of the cycling season. In addition, you can visit the MOU museum in Oudenaarde and surf or sup on the Donkvijver.
Or you can tour the Flemish Ardennes with a vintage 2CV.

In Ename, 10 minutes by car from the holiday home, you will find the forest ‘t Ename, one of the oldest forests in the region and the house Beaucarne, ideal for "high tea" in a completely original mansion from the 19th century.

20 minutes from the house you will find beautiful forests such as the Brakelbos, Livierenbos, the Muziekbos or a smaller pearl, nature reserve het Burreken. On routen you will find the most beautiful walks.

Just an hour's drive away you will find Paira Daiza, one of the most beautiful and award-winning zoos in Europe, on the site of a centuries-old abbey.
